Skye Basecamp is a hostel aimed specifically at climbers and other active visitors to the island. The building was refurbished through the summer of 2016 and has been open to the public since August. Skye Basecamp is a new development for our successful mountaineering business. Established in 1995 Skye Guides has a reputation for providing bespoke, high quality mountain guiding. We aim to develop the potential of our hostel in conjunction with the guiding & are looking for the right person to lead our team.
You should have-
- The ability to manage and motivate staff
- First class planning and organisation abilities
- A high degree of computer literacy
- Good understanding of taxation, VAT and other accounting systems
- Familiarity with employment law and PAYE systems
- A good knowledge of Skye
- A full UK driving license
Salary £25,000 – £35,000 commensurate with experience Start date – March 2017

As mentioned in the advert, SBC is an expansion to the Skye Guides mountain guiding business and will remain closely linked as we take the business forward. Skye Guides is owned and run by Mike and Catriona Lates. The guiding business started in 1995 and now employs up to 20 different mountain guides through the course of a summer season.
The successful applicant will work closely with us as a key member of the administration team for the whole business but primarily with responsibility for day to day running of the hostel. It is not important for the right candidate to be an active outdoor person but an understanding and sympathy with the market would be beneficial.
Skye Basecamp (SBC)
SBC is a new hostel currently offering a choice of beds in small shared dorms, private rooms and self-catering lets. The USP is as a “Climbers’ Hostel” but we are in no way exclusive. Modern climbers are not poor and are willing to pay a little extra for quality. Our facilities are deliberately high specification compared to many hostels with power showers, strong wooden beds, great kitchen facilities and a bespoke drying room. A key strategy in these early business stages is to promote the hostel to this market as opposed to the general tourist trade.
This is a full-time position suited to a professional individual who thrives on a diverse range of management and administration challenges. You will be joining an established team and adding your own expertise. There is scope for the right candidate to influence the nature of the post depending on their skills, domestic situation and personality.
On a daily basis the commercial manager will have responsibility to organise-
- Staffing and rotas
- Wages and time sheets
- Marketing and bookings
- Record keeping
- Laundry and cleaning
- Maintenance and renovation works
Amongst other roles in moving the business forward will be
- Promotion of the facility in the off-peak season
- Organising special events
- Attracting new markets
A key character of the successful applicant will be their personable nature with an ability to get on with a wide variety of people. At the same time, they should be capable of dealing with more serious issues in a direct but professional manner. A willingness to maintain and improve current high standards is another important characteristic we are looking for.
The right person will demonstrate good initiative, be happy to lead by example, get stuck in when needed but also know when to step back and delegate.
We require the candidate to be well versed & travelled throughout Skye in order to be able to advise guests effectively and liase with the local community.
This is a full-time position and it is important that both employer and employee are happy with each other so a trial period of 3 months is proposed. Pro-rata pay of £25,000 p.a. will be paid in this period. You will be expected to play a key role in getting the hostel up to full speed in preparation for the main summer season. As a salaried position, hours will be flexible.
After mutual appraisal, a permanent contract of employment will be agreed by both parties after 3 months, with a salary between £25,000 and £35,000. The seasonal nature of tourism on Skye means that holiday entitlement, benefits and bonuses can all be included in negotiations to suit the employee.
We recognise that staff are our most important asset and there will be plenty of support in terms of training and information. Both the guiding team and established SBC staff are a close-knit bunch but all very aware of how much they rely on each other to keep a happy working environment.
